Let's have a short excursion in its past.
Etienne Brule was the first European explorer to reach Michigan in 1620.
In 1668 Father Jacques Marquette established a permanent settlement at
Sault Ste. Marie.
In 1701 Antoine Cadillac establishes the fur-trading post that will
eventually become the city of Detroit.
In 1763 Britain acquires Michigan from France in treaty that ends French
and Indian war.
In 1796 American flag is raised in Michigan for the first time as British
leave Detroit.
In 1805 Congress establishes Michigan as a territory.
In 1837 Michigan joins Union as the 26th state.
In 1855 Soo Ship Canal and Locks, linking Lakes Huron and Superior,
open as Sault Ste. Marie.
In 1900 Detroit's first automobile plant is built.
In 1914 Automobile industry accounts for 37 percent of state's
manufacturing.
In 1942 Automobile factories convert to war production.
In 1957 Mackinac Bridge between towns of St. Ignace and Mackinaw City
joins Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
In 1974 Coleman A. Young becomes first black mayor of city Detroit.
In 1987 People Mover monorail, spanning almost three miles, opens in
downtown Detroit.
Nowadays there are many places of interest. For example:
- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
As well as beaches and waterfalls the Lake Superior shoreline boasts 15
miles of dramatic rock cliffs that have been eroded into unusual shapes;
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Part of the lake Michigan's
shoreline, this scenic area has two islands, vast sand dunes, beaches and
forests.
Mackinac Island. Rising from Lake Huron like the great turtle it was named
for, this island is home to caves, natural bridges, and historic Fort
Mackinac.
Isle Royale National Park. The isolation of Lake Superior's largest island,
9 miles wide and 45 miles long, has made it a naturalist's paradise. Among
the wildlife are moose, wolves, beavers and loons.
National Cherry Festival. The eight-day event, held every July, celebrates
Michigan's status as the nation's leading cherry producer. Parades, live
entertainment, sporting events, and cherry pies are the main attractions.
